Today marks the event which ties children and young people all over the world together and leads global change. It is the event which makes young people realize they have the power to take action and do something to change the world for the better.
I remember going to the giant Me to We conference at the Air Canada Centre back in 2007 when it all started. I was only in grade 11 then, and it was one of the main reasons I ended up going into journalism as opposed to dentistry – what a switch! I know. It was Ben Mulroney who was hosting and informed us of the power we had as young people. I realized that I had the power to create good and help others see the good through words, pictures, and film. Not that becoming a dentist wouldn’t do good… He made young adults like me feel empowered to make a change. And that’s exactly what children and young people need.
We can make the world a better place by working together and doing good. A little bit of kindness goes a long way. You could make someone’s day just by smiling at them, or maybe picking up that security pass-card that someone might not have known they dropped (personal experience). If we all did one little act of kindness, I’m sure it would make the world a much nicer place to live in.
